Emme Wines - Enhorabuena Carignan 2023
Notes from winemaker: The 2022 Ricetti Carignan rosé was so good, we decided to do it again. Like last year, all of the Carignan was picked at once, and a small portion was pulled aside for rosé. Because the Ricetti Carignan is so slow to ripen (especially in a year like 2023), the same pick date can produce both a fruity rosé as well as a crunchy red wine. I find it especially interesting to taste the two side by side and feel the difference that can be created by pressing fruit directly versus leaving it to ferment on skins for a week. For this direct press version, we do foot stomp the fruit and allow it to soak on skins for several hours before pressing, to soak up color and tannin into the juice. Once pressed, the juice settles overnight, is racked off gross less to stainless steel, and ferments dry in tank. After primary fermentation finished, the wine was moved to a combination of neutral oak barriques and stainless steel barrels. Both aged for 6 months, then were racked together to tank in late March for bottling.
Another year of a delicious Carignan Rosé from this winemaker. Beautiful salmon color, lovely on the nose with subtle floral hints. Juicy, jolly ranchers up front, extended mineral finish and so savory you won’t put this bottle down.
‘enhorabuena’ means congratulations, and more literally, ‘in the good hour’.
